UCU repeats warning of need for diploma teacher preparation

17 April 2008

UCU has responded to reports today of concerns about the delivery of the government's new diplomas.

Sally Hunt, UCU general secretary, said: 'UCU wants the new diplomas to work and we have long been warning about the speed of their introduction and the lack of workforce development and training necessary for the further education staff who will be delivering the first five diploma programmes in September. With other unions we wrote to Alan Johnson, then secretary of state at the DfES, about this a year ago.

'With around 100,000 expected to start taking the diploma in 2009, there is an urgent need for the government to look into what has happened and put some real resources into diploma staff development and training. Arrangements must be made to ensure that teachers and lecturers can actually attend such training.'
