UCU Scotland welcomes proposal of independent commission
28 February 2008
UCU has today responded to calls for an independent commission on university funding in Scotland.
Commenting on the amendments to the Graduate Endowment Abolition (Scotland) Bill, David Bleiman, assistant general secretary of UCU Scotland, said: 'UCU Scotland has previously called for a long term review of the purposes of higher education and supports an independent commission rather than the narrow remit of the joint task force between university principals and government.
'If the new Scottish government is genuinely interested in a new approach to Scottish higher education what is needed is something closer to a Robbins report rather than this narrow review. We support calls for a genuine wide-ranging review and membership, which we feel could genuinely be achieved by an independent commission.'
