Women elected to top two positions in world's biggest post-16 education union

 This afternoon Linda Newman was elected as the union's first president to create an all-female top two following the election of Sally Hunt as the new union's first general secretary on Friday.

Ms Newman, from the University of Sussex, is a former National Executive Member of one of UCU's predecessor unions, the Association of University Teachers (AUT). AUT merged with sister union the National Association of Teachers in Further and Higher Education (NATFHE) on 1 June 2006 to create the world's largest post-16 education union in the world.

Speaking after the election, Linda Newman said: 'I am truly honoured that UCU members have elected me as the union's first president. The key for our fledgling union is unity and I am looking forward to working with the thousands of members we have across further and higher education. These are exciting times and I am proud to have been entrusted with the responsibilities that come with the president's job.'

A total of 60 UCU individuals were declared elected this afternoon - the general secretary election result was declared last week and uncontested posts had already been declared.
