UCU responds to UCAS university figures
14 February 2007
UCU has responded to today's UCAS figures on applications for 2007.
UCU joint general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'It is encouraging to see an increase in the number of students applying to university, however we are yet to see any evidence of widening participation. The UK is rightly respected the world over for the education it provides, however, if it is to meet the challenges of university expansion and to maintain its proud position as a global leader higher education funding must be increased.
'The staff:student ratio in this country is well above the international average and staff are swamped with bureaucracy. Whilst we should be pleased that more students are applying to university, we need to ensure that they continue to receive the highest quality experience.'
