University and College Union (UCU) welcomes the Inquiry into tackling drugs in prisons and appreciates the opportunity to contribute to this important discussion. UCU represents over 120,000 post-16 education educators, some of whom are educators in prisons across the four nations in the UK. Our members who are involved in prison education witness firsthand the impact of drug misuse on the prison environment, the well-being and rehabilitation of prisoners, together with the impact on staff.
