Joint UCU SMT/Unite statement: 5 September 2024

5 September 2024

Unite and UCU negotiators met again at Acas on 4 and 5 September to try to find a way to address the issues in the current dispute.

Negotiators agreed the following, on which basis Unite negotiators will recommend to members that the continuous strike action due to commence on Monday 9 September be suspended:

  • UCU and Unite agree to arrange tripartite discussions with GMB under the auspices of Acas to cover the practicalities of recognition for both Unite and GMB for Grade H staff in line with Unite's existing recognition agreement.
  • UCU and Unite will seek the help of Acas to conduct an independent review of UCU's organisational culture. A meeting will be arranged with an Acas representative as soon as practicable to begin this work.
  • Both Unite and UCU commit to progress the work of the Race Review and ensure that any recommendations arising from the Review are acted on quickly.
  • UCU and Unite will agree a schedule of fortnightly meetings initially facilitated by Acas to rebuild industrial relations and conclude outstanding matters. Acas involvement to be reviewed on a monthly basis. Topics to be discussed and to be concluded by end of Monday 9 December 2024:
    • Gender Identity Policy
    • Return to offices and hybrid working
    • Safety management and related concerns.

The order for consideration of these matters will be the first item for discussion.

It is agreed by both parties that no public statements, other than jointly agreed statements, will be issued regarding this dispute.

It is agreed that the current Unite industrial action ballot mandate is extended from 12 November 2024 to 12 December 2024, with this to be reviewed by 9 October 2024 to consider any further extension.
