UCU responds to HEPI report on Black early-career academics

1 August 2024

UCU has today responded HEPI's report on Black early-career academics

UCU general secretary Jo Grady said: 'Despite some signs of progress highlighted by this report, it should be a mark of deep shame for higher education employers that Black academics still face so many barriers and inequities in the workplace. The lack of opportunity for progression to senior roles and professorships is nothing short of a scandal.

'Racial equality and justice in our universities is not an add-on or an abstract policy issue for UCU. We have long treated it as a core industrial matter, with a demand that the race pay gap - standing at up to 17% - be closed forming a central part of our national disputes in recent years. As a union, we will not rest until a radically more equal higher education sector is won.'
