UCU's manifesto for change in post-school education

11 June 2024

With the general election fast approaching, UCU has today set out a bold vision for a fairer and more sustainable post-16 education system that has the interests of students and staff at its heart.

Built around five core principles for an improved system, our manifesto sets out demands for wide-ranging reforms of funding, regulation and staff engagement across further, higher, adult and prison education.

Read the manifesto here.

Our messages focus on the need for improved pay and conditions across post-school education, as well as stronger measures to tackle inequality at all levels. Key demands include shifting the cost of higher education from students to employers, closing the pay gap between school and college teachers, rolling back anti-trade union laws and abolishing Ofsted inspections.

Our sectors have suffered more than a decade of cuts and decline--now more than ever we need political leaders to listen and take urgent action to ensure everyone can access the high-quality education and secure work they need and deserve.

Look out for more information and updates over the coming days including analysis of pledges from the main political parties and a template letter that you can use to write to parliamentary candidates.

In solidarity

Jo Grady
UCU general secretary
