Local defence fund: supporting HE branches fighting cuts

11 December 2023

We are seeing an increasing number of universities launching attacks on our members. Job cuts, department closures, and more are being threatened already at Oxford Brookes, Staffordshire, and Aberdeen Universities.

We have already been in touch with the local branches and are providing practical support.

But I wanted to let all members know that I believe these attacks are coordinated and have the support of the employer bodies. This means we much react with equal force, coordination and determination.

With this in mind, I have today agreed to reallocate budget within UCU head office to enable the creation of a local defence fund. This fund will enable Branches impacted by these attacks to work with us nationally to produce newspaper adverts, materials, events and more. We will use this fund to expose the actions of the employers in the local communities and beyond, and to help our branches do everything possible to fight against these proposed cuts.

We cannot and will not allow our members to be picked off.

In the coming days and weeks we will let you know how the additional backing is taking shape and what you can do to show solidarity and practical support to our impacted members.

Finally, well done to our branches who are fighting back and bringing members together. You are not alone.

Yours sincerely

Jo Grady
UCU general secretary
