Letter from UCU prison education branches to MoJ and the government

18 July 2023

UCU has written to Ministry of Justice (MoJ) officials and the government to call for clarity on issues like pensions, pay, contracts and the introduction of a Fair New Deal.

A letter about the lack of pay negotiations [194kb] was sent from UCU's Novus, Milton Keynes College, PeoplePlus and Weston prison education branches to officials at the Ministry of Justice. And UCU's head of further education also wrote directly [194kb] to prisons minister Damian Hinds MP to raise concerns about the lack of clarity around Fair New Deal for pensions in the prison contracts and the current procurement process.

An expected payment uplift of 10.4% to prison education providers has still not been applied, which means pay negotiations cannot start.

Regarding staff pension protection, UCU's view is that after the ONS reclassified Further Education Corporations (FE colleges) last year staff should be covered by the New Fair Deal for Pensions. Despite UCU repeatedly seeking confirmation of this important protection, the MoJ and UK government have failed to respond.
