Strike ballot opens at Barnsley College over 'unacceptable' 2% pay offer

5 May 2023

A ballot for strike action opened today at Barnsley College over a consolidated pay offer for 2022/23 of just 2%. The ballot will run until Monday 12 June and if successful will pave the way for strike action during key admissions dates unless management comes back with a better offer.

The industrial ballot comes after 97% of members who voted said they would back strike action in a consultative poll with a 70% turnout.

The total pay offer from the college is 2% plus a paltry £300 one off payment. Inflation is 13.4% and staff have already suffered more than a decade of real term pay cuts. Meanwhile, the latest college accounts show it has more than £9m in the bank.

UCU regional official Julie Kelley said: 'Staff at Barnsley College have told us they are prepared to strike to get a fair pay deal. With household costs soaring a 2% pay offer is simply unacceptable, our members are fed up of getting the scrap off the table and cannot stomach another swingeing real term pay cut.

'The college now has a small window of opportunity to come back to the table with a significantly improved offer, otherwise we expect our members to overwhelmingly vote in favour of striking.'
