Our response to threats, bullying and intimidation

18 November 2022

Over the past days we have seen dozens of examples of university management sending out bullying and intimidating emails threatening punitive deductions to our members for taking part in action short of a strike (ASOS).

We do not take these threats lightly and have put together a process for branches to follow if they have received these threats, which has been shared with your reps. You can also read our legal advice here.

Let me be very clear - your employers are issuing these threats because they are scared. They are scared that we have delivered the biggest ballot result in the history of higher education. They are scared that we are going to deliver the biggest picket lines that they have ever seen. And they are scared that they are seeing more support for the union than they have ever seen.

The single biggest thing that you as members can do is to remain laser focused on delivering the biggest strike action possible. Attend our pre-strike UCU Live event on Wednesday at 19:00, attend your local picket lines on Thursday and Friday and our virtual picket line at 10:30 on Friday, and make sure that you have invited all of your colleagues, friends and family to our national rally in London on November 30.

We will not back down to threats. We will not accept bullying and intimidation of our members. We will deliver the biggest pickets this sector has ever seen. And we will win.

In solidarity

Jo Grady
UCU general secretary
