UCU statement on overturning of Roe vs. Wade

24 June 2022

The overturning of Roe vs. Wade by the Supreme Court of the United States is an incredibly dark moment. It will threaten the lives of millions of women and those who need abortions across America.

UCU, the largest post-16 education trade union in the world, sends solidarity and love to our sisters in the United States amid this devastating rollback of their rights.

This decision will horrify all those across the world who believe in freedom, bodily autonomy, and basic human rights. We in the trade union movement must link arms globally and be at the forefront of defending and winning back these freedoms.

Indeed, abortion in the UK is still not a legal right and is under threat. This is sharply demonstrated by recent attempts to restrict access to at-home abortions, and in the fact that the requirement remains for two doctors to sign off before access to abortion is granted.

An injury to one is an injury to all. We cannot and we will not rest until women, trans, and non-binary people everywhere can safely, freely, and legally access abortion.

We encourage you to sign this petition to Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, and urge you, if you are able, to attend tonight's 7pm demonstration at the US Embassy in London.
