UCU ballots: timetable for announcing results and decisions on next steps

4 November 2021

As of 12pm today the ballots for industrial action in the USS and Four Fights disputes are closed. The final votes are being checked by Civica, the independent scrutineer that oversees UCU ballots.

Timetable for announcing ballot results

As it stands, I expect to be able to notify members of the results in the USS dispute, which covers 68 branches, this evening.

I expect to be able to notify members of the results in the Four Fights dispute, which covers 146 branches, tomorrow (Friday).

A list of the institutions in each dispute is available here.

Trade union law places UCU under extremely strict obligations to report results to employers and to members as soon as reasonably practicable after we receive them from Civica, which we will do.

Your role in decisions about our next steps

As soon as possible after all the results have been announced, you will be contacted with more information about the decisions that need to be taken by the UCU higher education committee (HEC) next Friday, 12 November.

Branches will be asked to feed into that HEC meeting by consulting their members as widely as possible about our next steps, and sending a delegate to a branch delegates' meeting which will take place immediately prior to HEC. For more detail on this process please follow this link.

There is a tremendous amount at stake in both these disputes and the whole union has worked hard over the past three weeks to gain the strongest possible mandate for action. Please bear with us as we wait to receive and process the final results and get them to you as soon as we possibly can.

UCU general secretary
