UCU Introduction to Casework, starting 21st September 2020

This is a course for reps who are new to representing individual members or those who are considering becoming more involved in the direct representation of individual members. This course is designed as an introduction only. More experienced reps may find this course useful in order to update their skills and look at current best practice. Please be aware that there is an expectation you attend the course in its entirety.

Course format: Online

The course is delivered by a TUC tutor over the course of four weeks and will consist of a combination of virtual course meetings and online work via a virtual learning platform. The course is 12 hours approx.. in total. There is an expectation that you will complete the self-directed study element in order that this course can be offered free to UCU.

Course meeting dates: 21st & 28th September 5th & 12th October 2020

Course meeting duration: One and a half hours 

Course meeting times: Unless advised otherwise by you course tutor, all course meetings will take place between 10:30 a.m. and 12 noon

In this course you will look at the following areas

  • UCU legal support scheme 
  • The role of the rep
  • Effective communication with members seeking advice and representation
  • Sources of support and information for members seeking representation
  • The importance of using individual cases for collective organisation and describe the circumstances and ways in which this can be done
  • How to develop a collaborative approach with the member and manage their expectations
  • Confidentiality and conflicts of interest
  • Your own rights and take care of your own well being when handling personal cases
  • How your institution/employers policies and procedures relate to individual representation
  • Systems for dealing with individual casework in your branch
  • Online communication with members and issues the pandemic has raised

Please note. Time off along with permission from your employer to attend applies to online courses in the same way as any face to face course.

This course will run again very shortly - so if you do not manage to get a place this time, we will keep your name on a waiting list and run further courses depending on demand.

When completing the application form please ignore the references to lunch and overnight accommodation.

Once you have have been advised by UCU that you are on this course, you will need to register on the TUC education site. If you are not already registered the course administrator will direct you to the relevant pages etc. It is a simple process and will give you access to all TUC content.

You will also be asked to register with the delivering college (trade union education team). Your course tutor and a member of the college team will assist you with this nearer the course.
