Strike on at Scottish universities tomorrow

30 October 2013

Staff at universities across Scotland will be on strike tomorrow as members of UCU, UNISON and Unite take their first ever coordinated strike action in a row over pay.

Staff will be on picket lines from 7am at universities in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stirling, Aberdeen, St Andrews and Dundee. Lunchtime rallies will be held in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and St Andrews. See below for full list of locations for pickets and rallies.

Classes will be cancelled across the UK as workers, angry at a 'miserly' pay offer of just 1%, walk out. University staff have faced a real-terms pay cut of 13% since 2008 - a situation Will Hutton recently described as one of the most sustained suppressions of pay since the Second World War.

All three unions said they expected there to be widespread support for the first walk out over pay in universities for seven years. More details on local action can be found at www.ucu.org.uk/hepay13, which is being updated regularly. Also follow the hashtag #fairpayinHE on Twitter.

UCU's Scottish Official, Mary Senior, said: "Staff at Scottish universities are angry they've had to endure massive pay cuts in recent years. This year's miserly 1% pay offer at a time of rising bills and increased pension contributions, was the straw that broke the camel's back. Staff love their jobs, but their goodwill cannot continue to be taken for granted."
