Committee chairs add pressure on PM over international students
31 January 2013
The chairs of five influential committees of cross-party MPs and peers* will today write to the prime minister to urge him to remove international students from net migration targets.
UCU welcomed the chairs' letter and said more had to be done to help international students who brought huge benefits to the UK, but were being increasingly maligned.
UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'The government has made it very clear it wishes to reduce net migration, but it needs to be very careful that it does not end up putting international students off studying in this country. International students bring widespread benefits to the UK and the committee chairs should be applauded for standing up for the increasingly-maligned international student.'
