UCU welcomes review of university governance

3 March 2010

UCU Cymru has today welcomed the announcement by education minister Leighton Andrews of a review into the governance of Welsh universities.

Margaret Phelan, Wales Official for UCU Cymru said: 'We welcome the review and see it as a positive step by the assembly government. In particular we welcome the emphasis on strengthening scrutiny, audit and strategic planning.

'As part of this process the review must look to strengthen the voice of staff and students in holding university leadership to account and to making a genuine contribution to the strategic direction of institutions.

'A stronger voice for academic staff, support staff and students would improve governance across the university sector. They experience the reality of university life on a daily basis., giving them the expertise, understanding and legitimacy to effectively challenge and scrutinise decisions that are taken.'
