UCU statement on the New Zealand terror attack

15 March 2019

Members of UCU's national executive committee (NEC) unanimously agreed this emergency statement at the start of their meeting on Friday 15 March, following a minute's silence for the victims of the New Zealand terror attack

'UCU is appalled by the coordinated fascist terrorist attack that took place in New Zealand killing 49 Muslims.

'We call upon all governments to wholeheartedly condemn this atrocity. The climate of hate towards Muslims that has been created by too many governments across the globe must stop.

'UCU reaffirms its complete commitment to stamp out racism from our colleges and universities and the whole of society.

'As educators we will take the lead in ensuring that people of faith are protected and have a safe environment to learn and pray.

'We call upon all UCU members to do all they can to ensure the anti-racist environment is the dominant one in all our educational institutions.

'UCU encourages you to be a part of the United Nations international day of action tomorrow against racism by joining the demonstrations in London, Glasgow or Cardiff.'
