Insecure contracts and how they have changed over time

The majority of the data used in the report is taken from the HESA staff data for 2017/18 - the latest we had at the time of writing.

Although this report was produced before the coronavirus crisis hit the UK, the report and the trends in the use of casualised contracts that it highlights still remain relevant and the data can still be used by branches locally to run local campaigns and progress local anti-casualisation claims.

Furthermore, the recommendations remain pertinent although we should also now add another: that employers stop targeting staff on casualised contracts for dismissal in response to an expected reduction in students and tuition fees in 2020/21 as a result of the Covid019 crisis.
