'We have achieved the best result possible'

My story and why I would recommend you join UCU

UCU recently provided invaluable support for a member facing proceedings in front of the Education Workforce Council ('EWC') Fitness to Practice Committee.

Before proceedings began the member had admitted some unacceptable conduct, having found herself in extremely difficult personal circumstances. However, the member also faced further very serious allegations from the EWC including ones of dishonesty and inappropriate behaviour which she strongly denied. The UCU Wales office and UCU legal team assisted the member throughout the EWC process and provided a barrister to represent her at the EWC hearing which took place over 6 days. The member said, 'I am so grateful to those who supported and represented me, from the local branch and staff in the UCU Wales office to the Barrister: all who represented me with such a high level of professionalism'.

'My experience, although I found it challenging, has been very illuminating and as such has restored my faith in myself as a teacher'At the facts stage of the hearing, all allegations against the member, with the exception of those she had admitted, were found not to be proved. During the proceedings, the member's local UCU representative gave evidence on her behalf which the panel referred to in their reasons for finding the disputed matters not proved against the member.

At the end of the EWC process, the member was given a Reprimand, which is the lowest disciplinary order that can be applied by the EWC. This means that she can apply to be on the EWC register without restriction and can continue her chosen career as a lecturer in Wales.

Reflecting afterwards on the process and support from UCU, the member commented, 'It is not without considerable effort from [the UCU team and barrister] that we have achieved the best result possible. Although it goes without saying that I hope I never find myself in this situation again, it has been a pleasure working with you all at such a high level of professionalism. My experience, although I found it challenging, has been very illuminating and as such has restored my faith in myself as a teacher.  It has given me the confidence to continue with my teaching career.'
