UCU response to Sutton Trust report on fairer access to university

Commenting on a report from the Sutton Trust looking at ways to increase the number of pupils attending the most selective universities, UCU said the report was a timely reminder that more had to be done to improve the chances of students from the most disadvantaged backgrounds.
The union said that although contextualised offers can help, lots of institutional tweaks to the current system would only further complicate things for applicants and called for a radical overhaul.
UCU general secretary Sally Hunt said: 'This report exposes just how much change is really needed to ensure that our brightest and best students get the chance to shine at university, whatever their background. Instead of lots of separate tweaks from different universities, which is likely to further confuse applicants, we need a radical overhaul of the system.
'We believe that getting pupils to apply to university after they get their results would be one massive step in the right direction.'
