Promotion and progression

16 February 2017

Please note the following outcomes from the workshop on promotion and progression facilitated by Steve Lui (BMSC). Workshop held at the UCU Black Members' Conference in Birmingham, December 2016.

Delegates offered the following suggestions and developed a position statement.

Suggestions:

1.   Black University

2.   The need for BME networks to address progression and promotion.

3.   "White" people need to change their structure and culture.

Position statement:

The workshop noted that positive action is required to address progression and promotion for black staff. Such positive action must come from the employer and UCU. Transparent policy and mentoring systems are required to facilitate career progression for black staff. We believe that black staff should be involved in decision making relating to progression and promotion. A culture change and education are required by "White" colleagues to understand the importance of diversity in the HE sector. We call on UCU to work extensively with the ECU to ensure the development of the Race Equality Charter and to embed the REF within all relevant institutional drivers.
