UCU response to government proposal of £1,000 levy for EU workers

11 January 2017

Responding to proposals by Home Office Minister Robert Goodwill to introduce a £1,000 levy for skilled EU workers, UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said:

'While it is clear that there are many issues with Brexit and its impact, ministers really are not doing much to make things any easier. This ludicrous idea would hit our universities with enormous bills and drive away the enquiring minds and talented staff the country needs.

'Rather than creating further confusion and damaging headlines around the world, the government should nip this problem in the bud and guarantee the thousands of EU workers the right to remain in the country.'
