UCU members at Coventry subsidiary company to be reinstated on original contracts

21 October 2016

The University and College Union (UCU) has today (Friday) welcomed a decision to allow a group of Coventry University staff recently moved onto agency contracts the opportunity to move back to their original contracts and be covered by a new recognition agreement for collective bargaining.

UCU had campaigned against a decision by the university's subsidiary company, CU Services, to re-engage staff teaching English to international students as agency workers through a different subsidiary company, TheFutureWorks Ltd.

The union had also called upon the management at Coventry University to engage constructively with UCU in relation to union recognition at all its subsidiary companies, and welcomed the university's agreement to meet with UCU on this issue.

UCU national bargaining official, Jonathan White, said: 'We welcome this decision to reinstate staff on their original contracts, and look forward to engaging in what we hope will be positive talks around the issue of recognition across Coventry University Group's subsidiary companies. We would like to thank the thousands of people from across further and higher education that supported the campaign and signed the petition calling for the staff to be reinstated.'
