Union responds to THE analysis of Nobel Prize winning universities

17 October 2016

UCU has today responded to analysis by the Times Higher Education of the most prolific Nobel Prize-winning universities and countries by saying that it proves the need for long-term research funding from government, and the importance of collaboration between countries and international academics.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'This analysis demonstrates once again the UK's impressive standing on the world stage. We share Nobel Prize winner Saul Perlmutter's concerns that some of the world's most important discoveries could have been missed if they had to operate under today's conditions.

'At a time when UK universities are trying to deal with the fallout of the Brexit vote, the government needs to ensure that university research is both properly funded and allowed to flourish. The Nobel Prize is another reminder of the importance of collaboration between countries and academics from around the world.'
