Progress over redundancy proposals at Cleveland College of Art and Design

22 June 2016

There has been a breakthrough in a dispute over redundancies at Cleveland College of Art and Design.

Staff were concerned earlier this week to learn that they had just days to submit their interest in a new role at the Teesside-based arts college, or risked being made compulsorily redundant. College managers met with representatives of UCU today and agreed to extend the consultation process and postpone the deadline for staff to express interest in new posts within the restructure.

The union and college have also committed to working together towards a solution that avoids the need for compulsory redundancies. Both parties will meet again on Tuesday 28 June to discuss next steps.

Cleveland College of Art and Design vice-principal, Stuart Slorach, said: 'The college is committed to continue the consultation with staff and the trade union, and we hope that this extended period will allow us to move forward in partnership. We look forward to working with UCU to the benefit of our staff and students.

UCU regional support official, Jon Bryan, said: 'We are pleased today's meeting addressed the serious concerns staff had about the college's proposals. We hope that we can continue to meet and work together to ensure all staff are kept up to date with what is happening and given time to consider their options. We also welcome the college's commitment to work with us to try and avoid any compulsory redundancies.'
