UCU statement on cancellation of conference at University of Southampton

Commenting on the cancellation of a conference at the University of Southampton entitled International Law and the State of Israel: Legitimacy, Responsibility and Exceptionalism, UCU said:

'Academic freedom and the freedom to debate difficult and controversial issues are key elements of any university. It is absolutely vital that staff and students feel comfortable enough to debate even the most provocative topics.

'Health and safety concerns must always be taken seriously, but they should never be used as an excuse to close down debate on difficult subjects.'
