Bargaining for equality - introduction: 8, 15 & 22 March 2022, online, North West

This course is aimed at UCU branch officers, equality officers, equality reps, and others in the branch who want to learn more about how to use equality legislation to tackle discrimination at work and how to develop and promote a branch based equality agenda.

Course meeting dates: 8, 15, 22 March 2022

Course meeting times: Some trade union education teams will hold their course meetings across the whole day i.e. 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Others will hold their meetings from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with an hour wash up session from 3:00 p.m. to 4 p.m. Your course tutor will advise nearer the time. Please see para below regarding facility time for the whole day.

Total duration: 15 to 18 hours 

Delivery method: virtual course meetings, coupled with self-directed work and some group work both virtually and in course meetings

Please ensure you can attend the entire course prior to submitting your application form. Please further ensure you have secured time off from your employer to attend and read all the information below.

 We ask that you take your facility time on the same day as your course meeting. This will allow you to complete the course activities, and to contact the tutor/attend the course debrief where offered. If the course tutor is expecting you to be available for the whole day (9:30 to 4:00) then please ensure you can commit to this.

Online courses are no different to face to face courses in terms of time off for training. Time of for training is a right and one which should be exercised as part of normal industrial relations. For more info please see Facilities and time off for UCU reps.

UCU courses are funded via members' contributions and public funding. When you apply for a course we will assume that are making a commitment to attend the course as advertised, and have secured time off from your employer. Please contact your branch/region if you are having problems securing time off.

Aims of the course:

  • understand the role of the UCU equality rep or equality officer
  • ensure equality is embedded within the branch bargaining and organising agenda.
  • find out more about discrimination legislation
  • improve equality policies and agreements
  • find out about good practice and share success stories
  • promote equality in the workplace, branch and the union
  • develop tools and techniques for raising equality issues
  • develop equality networks
  • sharpen negotiating skills

Disclaimer - Please be aware: You may be asked to register with the delivering college in which your trade union tutor is employed. Where colleges are drawing down funding for delivery you will be ask for your passport or equivalent identification details to register.

This is a demand of the college who are following government requirements in order to satisfy public funding criteria. This is not a requirement UCU want to see and we are lobbying for change. However, as it stands, if you do not register with the college, you place will not be fundable.
