Alternative funding models for higher education to be welcomed

UCU today welcomed a report that looks at alternative funding models for higher education in England. The current system, which has been undermined by accusations that it was put together without proper research, will end up costing taxpayers much more than originally anticipated.

The report, from the think-tank million+, concludes that both its alternative models - lowering fees to £6,000 a year or introducing a graduate tax - would cost no more than the current system

UCU said there was a need for a serious debate about how to fund our universities to ensure that they remained key players on the global stage.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'This report is a timely reminder of the chaotic mess that the current system is in.

'We spend far less than competitor countries on higher education and risk being left behind. While we need a proper debate about how best to fund our universities and students in the future, UCU believes public investment in our universities is needed to drive the knowledge economy and the growth the country needs.'
