Government's response to select committee report on higher education reforms is not good enough

18 June 2012

UCU said today that the higher education sector needed proper regulation of for-profit education providers. The union was commenting on the government's response to the Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) select committee's report on higher education reforms, published this morning.

UCU said the experience of for-profit providers in the US had to act as a call for greater regulation of for-profit providers. US higher education has been embroiled in a series of high-profile scandals where for-profit providers have milked public funds but left students with enormous debts and degrees of questionable quality.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'The select committee voiced serious concerns about the regulation of for-profit providers and the government's response is simply not good enough. Strict regulation of companies seeking to make a profit out of higher education and access taxpayers' money should be in place before they can access public funds.

'The US experiment warns us that we need greater regulation of companies seeking to make money out of our higher education system. At present for-profit providers are not subjected to quality controls as tough as those faced by our public universities.'
