Protests outside Strathclyde University meeting

Staff at the University of Strathclyde will tomorrow lead protests against proposed cuts to services and the threat to over 100 jobs, as the University Court - the institution's ruling body - meets to take decisions on the university's future.
Members of UCU will lobby members of the Court from 9.45am. The meeting will be taking decisions on restructuring plans as the university seeks to move from being a broad based educational establishment towards an 'Institute of Technology'.
The union believes the meeting is the first wave of job cuts and restructuring at Strathclyde University and has deeps concerns over the academic and financial viability of the plans and has submitted alternative proposals to the meeting. The protestors will be urging Court members to vote against the plans for jobs losses and cuts to services when it meets on Friday.
UCU Scottish Official Mary Senior said: 'Strathclyde University has a proud reputation for delivering a wide-ranging educational experience, from teacher education and social work to law, politics as well as science, engineering and technology.
'UCU is urging the university not to put all of this at risk by making swingeing and short-sighted cuts just as a new Scottish Government - committed to funding higher education - is being formed in Holyrood.'
