UCU warns of international reputation damage as new university world rankings are released

10 March 2011

UCU today warned that the UK's proud global reputation could be at risk from government policy, as Times Higher Education (THE) magazine published its World Reputation Rankings.

Rankings based exclusively on universities' standing among experienced academics all over the globe reveal that America has the most highly regarded universities in the world, followed by the UK.

However, UCU warned that in the global university marketplace the UK was at real risk of falling behind as competitor countries invested more in their universities and research and became more attractive to foreign students.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'We have a proud international reputation and rightly so. However, we will soon get found out if we think we can trade on reputation alone. As the international market gets ever more competitive it is bizarre and damaging that we are not making efforts to keep up.

'We are at real danger of falling behind the rest of the world. Other countries are investing in their universities, in research and in their students. Students, academics and funders are far more aware of what different universities across the globe can offer. Past glories will not be enough to tempt or keep them here.'
