Figures confirm Scots missed out on university places this summer

Figures from the university admissions body, UCAS, revealed that only 36,593 Scottish applicants were accepted into a Scottish university this summer, a fall of 10% from last year. However, there was a marked increase in Scots studying in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

UCU Scottish official, Mary Senior, said: 'A perfect storm of lack of places and high demand led to a decline in acceptances into Scottish institutions. The fact that thousands of students missed out on the opportunity to better themselves is tragic. Other countries are increasing the number of graduates they produce to compete in a high-skill knowledge economy. If we don't find the funding to close the gap then we risk being left behind.'
