UCU response to damning Ofsted apprenticeships report

UCU said the report highlighted problems with the quality of apprenticeships as well as concerns over the number of young people considering them.
 
It said young people needed much better advice and called on politicians to concentrate on delivering quality programmes and not just waxing lyrical about the number of apprenticeships they want to create.
 
UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'Politicians of all stripes have many warm words for apprenticeships, but delivering high-quality courses is about more than simply a numbers game.
 
'This report reinforces our concerns that too many apprenticeships are not up to scratch and they are not appealing to young people. We believe that better advice for young people may help, but we need high-quality programmes that actually cater for the needs of different types of students and employers.'
