People before profit London protest on the eve of Washington summit

14 November 2008

Members of UCU's London Region, supported by other London trade unions, will this evening be protesting outside HM Treasury calling on the government to put people before profit.

On the eve of Saturday's Washington summit, where leaders of the 20 most powerful nations meet to decide global economic priorities, protestors will be calling for a united campaign to save jobs, defend living standards and oppose war.

The 'Put people first' protest starts at 4.30pm and has the support of trade unionists from the Public and Commercial Services union (PCS), the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) and the Communication Workers Union (CWU).

Sean Vernell UCU London Region NEC Member, said: 'As George Bush and the leaders of the 20 most powerful nations meet in Washington to discuss bailing out the banks and shoring up profits, we will be outside the Treasury sending a clear message that people must come before profit. We need a strong campaign to save jobs, defend living standards and oppose war.'
