UCU sponsors LGBT conference

24 October 2008

UCU is to sponsor the largest gathering of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) research in the UK, which is being held next month.

The one-day conference at Northumbria University on Friday 28 November, entitled 'Becoming or Unbecoming?' will profile the latest research on LGBT issues and allow academics, researchers and practitioners to share best practice and ideas.

The keynote speakers at the conference will include Professor Ian Rivers from Brunel University, who will talk about the state of LGBT research, and Sue Sanders from Chrysalis Team and School's Out who will talk about the need to develop links between academics and activists.

The conference will have a host of panel debates where academics and activists will present research and case studies of their work. Subjects up for debate include domestic violence, body image and eating disorders, health and sexual health, queer theory and homophobia

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'UCU is proud to support the Becoming or Unbecoming conference. LGBT studies and research are absolutely crucial in our universities. It really wasn't that long ago that such pioneering work was unheard of and activists in education were fighting poisonous gagging orders such as Section 28. This is a fantastic opportunity to discover exactly what is happening academically through research and key issues for activists.'

Registration information can be found here.
