UCU comment on age discrimination ruling

23 September 2008

UCU today commented on today's rejection by the advocate-general in the European court of justice in Luxembourg of the claim by Age Concern that compelling people to stop work at or after 65 without compensation breaches EU equality requirements.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'We do not consider this decision to be the end of the matter.

'It does not necessarily mean the court will reach the same conclusion. Either way it is now essential that the equality bill addresses the issue of the default retirement age. We will seek to negotiate agreements at local level to remove the default retirement age because we believe that doing so is in the best interests of our members of students and higher education in general.'
