Glasgow 'April Fools' rally against university privatisation

31 March 2008

Staff at Glasgow Caledonian University will be protesting on April Fool's Day as part of their campaign to keep the private firm, INTO, out of the University.

The 'Only a fool would privatise higher education' rally will begin at 1pm.

Staff who are members of all the trade unions on the campus are holding a rally at 1pm to oppose plans by INTO to open an access college for international students using public funds and university resources.

Local MSP for Glasgow Kelvin Pauline McNeill will speak to the rally, as will Glasgow MSP and Councillor Bill Kidd along with union officials. There will also be speakers from Oxford Brookes University unions who successfully kicked INTO out of their campus.

University management have been invited to address the rally, but have refused the invitation and have continued to stay quiet over the details of the deal.

Terry Brotherstone President of UCU Scotland, who is also addressing the rally said: 'We congratulate the combined union committee at Glasgow Caledonian for standing up against the strong arm tactics of INTO and the secrecy of the management at the university. There is a national pattern of the privatisation of education that must be resisted at local level and UCU fully supports these campaigns. We require a proper higher education system based on democratic principles not back door deals based on profit.'
