Eligibility

Under UCU's rules, membership is open to anyone who works as an academic, lecturer, trainer, instructor, researcher, administrator, manager, computer staff or librarian in a UK university, college, prison, adult education or training organisation. If you are in any of these categories, you are eligible for Standard membership of the union.

Subscriptions are based on earnings, but some membership categories are free:

As a member of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), UCU does not seek to recruit staff in a grade or job group for which we have no formal representational rights, and for which another trade union is recognised by the employer - if in doubt about whether UCU is appropriate for your job role, please ask your local branch contact.
