Election address

I was a Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Computing in the North West Institute of Further and Higher Education/ North West Regional College for 32 years until my retirement.

I taught on a range of programmes including National Diploma, Higher National Certificate / Diploma, Foundation Degree and Postgraduate Certificate / Diploma.

I was the Academic Staff representative on the NWIFHE / NWRC Board of Governors 1995-2017. As part of my role, I spent five years on the Audit Committee, and five years on the Finance and General Purposes Committee.

Member of the Branch Committee of the NWIFHE / NWRC 1990-2019.

From 1995-2019, I undertook the roles of Assistant Branch Secretary, Health and Safety Representative, Branch Secretary, Branch Chair and, finally, Retired Members' Representative.

Staff /union representative on the NWIFHE Academic Board.

Regional union activities

NWIFHE / NWRC Branch Representative on the Northern Ireland Regional Committee / Regional Council 1998-2018.

A NATFHE / UCU representative on the Northern Ireland Lecturers' Negotiating Committee (LNC) 2001-2017. Northern Ireland retained collective bargaining after incorporation and matters relating to pay and conditions of service are dealt with at the LNC.

UCU Northern Ireland Regional Secretary 2007-2019.

UK level union activities

NATFHE / UCU NEC and FEC member 2004-14, 2016-present.

Education Committee 2008-2014, 2016-present. Committee Chair 2012-2014.

Strategy and Finance Committee 2012-2014.

Northern Ireland FE representative on the Devolution Working Group.

Congress Delegate 2000-present.

UCU's five trustees, elected by UCU members for a term of five years, oversee the union's property and funds.

My lengthy and varied experience at branch, regional and national level representing NATFHE / UCU members, and my extensive wider experience and understanding of governance and financial oversight will enable me to be an effective Trustee.

It will allow me to take the long-term view required of a Trustee which ensures that UCU remains financially and legally able to serve our members' interests and support our union's work.

It has equipped me with the skills needed to exercise the challenge function expected of Trustees when holding our elected officers and committees to account and safeguarding the union's assets and legal position.

If elected, I will work with other Trustees to ensure that those assets continue to be used and protected to enable the union's pursuit of its aims and objectives.

I seek your vote in order to undertake the vital and responsible work of keeping UCU safe and strong.
