UCU Reps blended learning course, 20th November 2019 - January 2020, London

This exciting new amalgamation of our current Rep 1 & 2 course is aimed at new UCU reps and those more establish reps who have yet to complete training.

Classroom dates: 20th November 2019 (one day), 15th to 17th January 2020 (three days)

Venue: London

Online modules: form 13th November to 10th January 2020 (1-2 hours per week approx.)

This exciting new training format, will run concurrently alongside the more familiar class room based Rep 1 & 2 format.

This course is the same in terms of content but slightly different in terms of format for the following reasons;

  • we have responded to Reps suggesting that UCU provide a blended learning option
  • we appreciate that six days (Rep 1 & 2) can be difficult for those with caring responsibilities
  • we are responding to Reps who want a more mobile and easily accessible form of learning

The course consists of

  • pre course work - on line with tutor support
  • one day classroom module
  • online module over a one month period with tutor support
  • three day face to face module
  • follow-up webinar/online remote group follow up

Those taking part in this certificated course will need to ensure that they can commit to the entire course prior to submitting their application. Like any other UCU course you should (via your branch) negotiate facility time from your employer to complete the course.

The course will cover the following

  • UCU structures & history
  • The role of the rep, your rights and activities
  • Organising around Equality
  • Branch organising and member participation
  • Involving members, communication, campaigns & organising
  • Mapping, and understanding who you represent
  • Recruitment and retention of members
  • Identifying issues
  • The individual and collective nature of union work
  • Best practice when advising and supporting members, planning cases, paperwork & preparation
  • Formal hearing best practice
  • GDPR considerations

If you are already booked onto a Rep 1 or 2 course we would strongly advise and expect you to honour your current booking as the overall course content is the same. Low numbers on current courses will result in course cancellations and disappointment for other course attendees.

More about the course make up
