1. UCU casualisation report
You may have read recently the research undertaken by UCU nationally on casualisation with the publication of the report entitled Counting the cost of casualisation in further, adult and prison education, a copy of which can be accessed here. This report warns that the widespread use of casual contracts is damaging the quality of research and the education students receive. The research also highlights the detrimental impact that casualisation has upon the health and well-being of staff with over two-thirds of respondents (71%) stating their mental health had been damaged by working on insecure contracts and more than two-fifths (43%) said it had impacted on their physical health. 

We would encourage branches to use the survey results to initiate discussions locally and to develop campaigns and negotiating targets around anti-casualisation. Our UCU national office has also offered to provide help and support to resource local work in branches.

2. EYST All Wales BME Engagement Programme research study: Experiences of BAME (Black, Asian and Ethnic minority) graduates in Wales' labour market
EYST All Wales BME Engagement Programme are conducting research on the labour market experience of BAME graduates who have completed higher or further education within the past five years (or will graduate within the next year). They are holding three focus groups as follows: 

  • Cardiff:  23rd July, 5:30-7pm, EYST Office, Butetown, S Loudoun Place

  • Swansea:  25th July, 6-7:30pm, EYST Drop-in, Swansea, 11 St Helens Rd

  • Newport: 30th July, 5:30-7pm, location TBA 

The research will seek to identify any barriers to employment for BAME graduates such as discrimination, but also to highlight good outcomes, success stories and best practices.  The information will be used to write a short publicly available evidence paper which will be used to influence Welsh Government and Higher Education institutions to create positive changes in policy and practice. 3. Staff wellbeing in higher education report
The Education Support Partnership recently commissioned a report to be completed to investigate the health and wellbeing of staff in higher education. The report has now been completed and includes valuable information about the causes, prevalence and nature of health and wellbeing issues experienced by staff. Mae'n bosibl eich bod wedi darllen yn ddiweddar am y gwaith ymchwil a gynhaliwyd gan UCU yn genedlaethol ar y defnydd o gontractau dros dro yn sgil cyhoeddi adroddiad o'r enw Counting the cost of casualisation in further, adult and prison education, y ceir copi ohono yma. Mae'r adroddiad hwn yn rhybuddio fod y defnydd eang a wneir o gontractau dros dro yn cael effaith andwyol ar ansawdd yr ymchwil a'r addysg a gaiff myfyrwyr. Mae'r ymchwil hefyd yn tynnu sylw at yr effaith andwyol a gaiff y defnydd o gontractau dros dro ar iechyd a llesiant staff gyda dros ddwy ran o dair o ymatebwyr (71%) yn nodi bod gweithio ar gontractau ansefydlog wedi cael effaith andwyol ar eu hiechyd meddwl, a dros ddwy ran o bump (43%) yn nodi ei fod wedi effeithio ar eu hiechyd corfforol.

Byddem yn annog canghennau i ddefnyddio canlyniadau'r arolwg i gychwyn trafodaethau yn lleol ac i ddatblygu ymgyrchoedd a thrafod targedau er mwyn mynd i'r afael â'r defnydd o gontractau dros dro. Mae ein swyddfa UCU genedlaethol hefyd wedi cynnig darparu help a chymorth er mwyn sicrhau bod adnoddau ar gael ar gyfer gwaith lleol mewn canghennau.

Mae Rhaglen Ymgysylltu BME Cymru Gyfan EYST wrthi'n gwneud ymchwil i brofiad graddedigion BAME sydd wedi cwblhau addysg uwch neu addysg bellach o fewn y pum mlynedd diwethaf (neu a fydd yn graddio o fewn y flwyddyn nesaf) o'r farchnad lafur. Maent yn cynnal tri grŵp ffocws fel a ganlyn: 

  • Caerdydd:  23 Gorffennaf, 5:30-7pm, Swyddfa EYST, Butetown, S Loudoun Place 

  • Abertawe:  25 Gorffennaf. 6-7:30pm, Sesiwn galw heibio EYST, Abertawe, 11 St Helens Rd

  • Casnewydd: 30 Gorffennaf, 5:30-7pm, lleoliad i'w gadarnhau 

Bydd yr ymchwil hon yn ceisio nodi unrhyw rwystrau i gyfleoedd cyflogaeth i raddedigion BAME fel gwahaniaethu, ond bydd hefyd yn ceisio tynnu sylw at ganlyniadau da, straeon o lwyddiant ac arfer gorau. Caiff y wybodaeth ei defnyddio i ysgrifennu papur tystiolaeth byr a gaiff ei gyhoeddi a ddefnyddir i ddylanwadu ar Lywodraeth Cymru a sefydliadau Addysg Uwch i greu newidiadau cadarnhaol o ran polisi ac arfer. 3. Adroddiad ar Lesiant Staff mewn Addysg Uwch
Yn ddiweddar, gwnaeth y Bartneriaeth Cymorth Addysg gomisiynu adroddiad i ymchwilio i iechyd a llesiant staff mewn addysg uwch.  Mae'r adroddiad bellach wedi'i gwblhau ac mae'n cynnwys gwybodaeth werthfawr am achosion, cyffredinrwydd a natur materion iechyd a llesiant a brofir gan staff. Gellir gweld copi o'r adroddiad yma.
